Featured Presentation

Troubleshooting Deadlocks

Speaker: Rebecca Kern

Summary: Deadlocks are an issue that can cause data loss and performance issues on a database. A deadlock happens when two or more tasks permanently block each other by each task having a lock on a resource which the other tasks are trying to lock. When a deadlock is detected, SQL Server intervenes to kill one of the processes involved in the deadlock to allow the other processes to complete. The killed process may or may not exist gracefully. While deadlocking is not a new issue, the art of resolving the deadlock for a DBA in a large company can be challenging This presentation will be an introduction to troubleshooting deadlocks. It will cover capturing deadlock events, understanding the information collected, identifying the reason for the deadlock and possible resolution for two of the most common deadlocks.

About Rebecca: Rebecca has worked with Microsoft SQL Server 4.21. She holds a legacy MCSE from 2002. Rebecca has been in various Microsoft SQL Server, Operating System, and network support roles that have in recent years centered as a SQL Server as a DBA supporting SQL 2008 and 2012 for a global corporation. Rebecca enjoys learning and wants to contribute to the shared information the professional SQL Server user community. She participated this year as volunteer coordinator for Houston’s SQLSaturday. Rebecca holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from University of Houston Downtown.
